Pastor Helen LaVerne Tookes

Pastor Helen Lavern Tookes Mercer of 320 Arch Helms Road, Americus, Georgia died Saturday, April 4, 2020 at the Phoebe-Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia.

The graveside funeral service to be attended by 10 family members ONLY will be held Wednesday, April 8, 2020 at the Eastview Cemetery in Americus, Georgia.

On May 31, 1955 this world was blessed with the birth of a loving and kind soul. Pastor Helen LaVerne Tookes Mercer was born to the parentage of Pastor George Moore, Jr. and Essie Mae Tookes.

She earned her high school diploma from Union High School in 1973. She attended South Georgia Technical School and obtained a Master Cosmetology degree. Her achievement in cosmetology led her to open her own business, Mercer’s Beauty Salon.

She served as a faithful member of Old Shady Grove Baptist Church under Pastor Jessie Watts before being called to pastor. In 1994, she was saved and infilled with the Holy Ghost. In 1999, she was called to pastor Christians On A Mission Deliverance Center, Inc. under the leadership of Apostle Timothy L. Miller and Apostle Pamela Miller of VIP.

Pastor Mercer embodied love. She loved family gatherings and family vacations. She enjoyed fellowshipping with friends and meeting new people. Celebrating the holidays, baking and shopping were also things she enjoyed as well. Her greatest joy came from teaching and preaching the word of God.

On Saturday, April 4, 2020, Pastor Mercer transitioned from this life to life eternal leaving cherished memories to her husband, of 46 years, Sammy Lee Mercer. To their union she bore seven children, Derick (Valisa) Mercer, Chetkiel Mercer, Latoya Mercer, Santita Mercer, Karnisha Mercer, Kendrick Mercer, and Kentrell Mercer. Although Valisa was her daughter-in-law she was considered her eighth child. She has three grandsons Malcolm Mercer, Ayden Mercer Battle, and Kason Mercer-White; her parents, Reverend George Moore, Jr. of Rockford, Illinois and Mother Essie Mae Tookes of Americus, Georgia.

She is survived by nine siblings; Eugene (Kathy) Tookes, Raymond (Patricia) Tookes, Bobby Tookes, Edward Tookes, and Vernessa Tookes all of Americus, Georgia, Barbara (Emory) Jackson of Albany, Georgia, Curtis Moore, Sr. of Cordele, Georgia, Marilynn (William) White of Ohio, and Georgetta (Kenny) Lawson of California.

Also she leaves a close and dear friend, relative and armor bearer Missionary Helen (George) Perry and Crystal Perry.

She is preceded in death by four siblings, Logan Tookes, Leonard Tookes, Sonya Tookes, and Roland Moore.
